Knollwood Community Center's Partnership With Saint David's Episcopal Church

Knollwood is a low-income community located north of Claymont, Delaware on Philadelphia Pike. It is comprised of 150 homes that were built in 1917 as housing for workers employed by an adjacent steel mill. After the mill closed in 1964, the houses were sold to the residents and local investors, and the neighborhood began to deteriorate.

Help the Knollwood Community Center
In general, items needed are: School supplies (the usual, wide-ruled notebook paper, pencils, folders, etc.), juice boxes, individually packaged snacks, games, G-rated videos, toys suitable for children K-1st grade. The Center serves children K-6th grades. Toys, videos and games can be used -- maybe ones that your family has outgrown. History of Our Involvement

In recent years, many people who live in Knollwood wanted to make a positive change in the community. In 1996 the New Knollwood Civic Association was formed to help revitalize the community. A small office building was acquired to serve as a community center where after school care, a summer day camp, and adult and family activities are held. The Civic Association has obtained grants and support from the state, school district, University of Delaware, and various companies in the community to support their many worthwhile programs. A food closet is being established and distribution is expected to begin in September, 2004.

Late in 2002 St. David’s Outreach Committee was searching for a ministry that would allow us to develop relationships with people and help make a difference in the lives of others. Knollwood seemed like a perfect match. It was close to home and provided a variety of opportunities to get involved. Our parishioners generously provided Christmas for three families that December.

Since then, our involvement has grown. Our Christmas Adopt-a-Family program has continues. We provide school clothes for families in need. The middle school youth headed a school supply drive in which we participated. We’ve shared science activities at summer camp and led children’s activities at their Community Pride Day. Juice boxes, snacks and craft materials have been donated. One of our members, Jeanne Marie Yohe, now serves on their Board of Directors. We have donated money to help initially stock their new food closet.

We hope to get more parishioners involved in tutoring and in community activities. Please call Jeanne Marie Yohe at (302) 477-1030 or Amy Myers at (302) 654-7445 to learn more.

HUD ANNOUNCEMENT, July 1, 2004
The New Knollwood Civic Association has begun work on one of seven houses acquired for rehabilitation and resale, as part of a HUD-funded $625,000 HOME Grant to New Castle County. Knollwood, a close-knit community of approximately 500 residents, currently has a 60% home ownership rate. The rehabilitation effort, which anticipates the acquisition and rehabilitation of 30 homes, is intended to strengthen the Claymont area by helping residents become homeowners. In addition to the rehabilitation of homes, the development's Community Center used a $30,000 HUD Community Development Block Grant to enhance a handicap-accessible concrete entrance ramp, refurbish a handicap-accessible rest room, and pave a parking lot.
